Crate Training alternatives?

My mother and I are seriously thinking of getting a puppy. If we do get one, will be a small breed (Yorkshire, Maltese). We get her to be a refuge, not a breeder. I was wondering what some alternatives for the training fund were. I never liked the idea of training the box, because if I were a dog, I just feel like my owner does not love me and I was blocking. I know that is supposed to make your puppy love his cage but I can not imagine loving anyone anything like that. I was wondering what some other method of housetraining you have been. For example, I was watching this: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754775 to put in my room to keep it in, with a bed, and puppy pads. I know this would not work for housetraining, but what are the alternatives? I like the idea of feathered game (see link), but I do not know how to factor in this home. Thanks for all the help we can give!

I want to use a pen to play then pee pads if you intend to train indoors. If not, then use the pee pads in the box for all possible signs of losing the puppy needs to go the bathroom. Take your puppy on a schedule. Once you have the pup for a while 'you know how often he needs to relieve itself.
